Hi all, I hope you are enjoying the snowy conditions!!
The headline news this week is that Kim Hill, our Head of Performance Swimming will be leaving us at the start of April.
Kim has been with the club for nearly 4 years and in this time has transformed the Performance Programme. This has included delivering record numbers of swimmers and medallists at Counties, Regionals and National level; promotion to, and survival in, the Premier Division of Arena League; achieving top club awards at many meets; and, most recently, topping the medal table at the Hampshire County Championships.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Kim for her dedication to the club over the years and the instrumental role she has had in the club’s achievements. We wish her continued success.
We are very mindful of the impact our current situation may present to the welfare of some of our swimmers, their goals and our ability to service our programme and competition schedule from April onwards. We are making short-term and longer term plans on that basis and intend to keep disruptions to a minimum. We will keep you informed of plans and progress.
Following the recent Board of Trustees meeting, minutes have been finalised and can be found by clicking the following link http://wcpsc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Trustee-Minutes-19-Feb-18.pdf . Any questions or queries on these please let us know.
The Board have completed a review of the Constitution and now have a draft that we intend to share and consult with members. This process has been necessary through a health-check of our Swim England accreditation, which flagged a need to bring our Constitution in line with the model ASA one. I will publish the draft in due course for feedback and will arrange meetings with key volunteer groups to discuss. We will then need to submit a final draft to the ASA and Charities Commission for ratification, before co-ordinating a general meeting of the membership to adopt it.
As previously mentioned, we are evolving the next iteration of our strategy at present and will be engaging the membership in that process. Discussions to date have focused on a principle to consolidate the good things about the charity and build on our successes as we move towards the opportunities a 50m pool presents. This, in essence, is an extension and redefining of our existing strategy and recommitment to some of those goals. I look forward to sharing and moulding that with you.
The weather forecast for Thursday and Friday is predicting snow and very cold temperatures. Whilst we plan to go ahead with training as usual, there is the risk of sessions being cancelled if facilities close or if coaches are unable to get there, so please check your emails and the website for before leaving home. It is of course left to your discretion if you feel safe and comfortable to make the journey to training or competitions. Please do not put yourselves at risk.
NEW WORLD RECORD HOLDER - RORY FITZGERALD!
In waters of 3.6 degrees Celsius – Winchester’s very own Rory Fitzgerald broke the World Record for the 60+ age category in the 1000m at the British National Ice Swimming Championships in Yorkshire.
Rory is pictured here (left) with budding young open water swimmers Fergus, Charlotte and Rory Q. Also pictured (right) is Ram Bakari who was the former world record holder before Rory’s national swim!
Aspire go bowling!
Last Saturday the Aspire squad assembled at Eastleigh Hollywood bowl for a hotly contested game of ten pin bowling. Several declared themselves winners of the game. After this a “healthy snack”and a mocktail were consumed before they departed.
I think all the squad agreed that it had been good fun and are looking forward to the next social event.
Volunteers Needed for Primary Schools Gala planning team
Our annual Primary Schools Gala will be held on Friday 8th June 2018 at Riverpark Leisure Centre.
If you have some time to spare and would like to join our established team to help organise this great event we would love to hear from you, so please do email Vicky if you are able to get involved.
This week is distance week in lessons, meaning that may of our widths swimmers have been given the opportunity to have a go at swimming lengths. This can seam like a daunting task for many swimmers, especially when the majority of the time they are only swimming 10m and then suddenly they are asked to swim 25m! However our swimmers have taken it in their stride and done a brilliant job with many of them gaining distance badges. Well done swimmers!
All badges will be available to purchase on the week commencing the 19th March. Please remember to bring some cash with you as we don’t yet take card payments. Badges cost £3.50 each.
On Saturday we had many of our lessons swimmers attend the Novice Gala and compete for the first time. I was blown away by the amazing sportsmanship so many of them displayed. It was fantastic to see so many of our swimmers cheering one another on and having our older swim swimmers officiating! Its great that within our club there are so many different sections but that we can all come together to put on a brilliant community event.
We plan to run as normal this week – regardless of the bad weather! However do follow us on FB to keep up to date with the most recent notices and news.
Easter Holiday Intensive Swimming Course
Club T-shirts and Hoodies for the lessons programme!
It’s great to see some of our swimmers arriving at lessons in the new WCPSC lessons t-shirts and hoodies! If you haven’t got yours yet why not have a look at the range below. They are great value, and available in a wide variety of colours, and you are able to add your initials and/or surname to the back if you would like to!
If you can’t see a colour you would like, why not suggest one and we will see if we can add it to the range!

NEW - OPEN MEETS INFORMATION GUIDE!
We have recently added a comprehensive guide to swim competitions on the website here:
This includes a guide to the different types of competitions we enter (from galas to Nationals and beyond!); a guide to how to enter meets; and a glossary of some of the terms you may hear.
There is information relevant to all levels of swimmer, but those newer to the sport may find it particularly helpful.
Grand Prix Round 3
We are currently going ahead, if possible, with GP3 this Saturday. I’m still hoping it won’t be as bad as they are suggesting!!
The pool is still booked however if they cannot get their staff in or we do not have enough officials and swimmers able to get in safely, then we will have to make a decision to cancel. We are likely to be doing that on Saturday morning. So if you know that it will not be possible for you to get in for the afternoon then please do let me know.
I will be sending an email out to all swimmers on the Saturday morning to let them know if we do need to cancel. Currently I should be coaching & teaching till 10am so notification will be about 10.45-11am.
