CEO Update

Hi all, hope your weeks are going well!

Monday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Winchester City Council Overview and Scrutiny Cabinet Meeting where they were discussing the Sports and Leisure Facility due to be built at Bar End and opened in 2020. Last week the pool specification was agreed as a 50 metre community pool and this week’s meeting was supposed to progress to looking at the Outline Business Case for the new centre – in essence checking whether the financials stack up. Although most of the debate still centred around the specification of the centre, and primarily 8 vs 12 badminton courts, there was certainly consensus that a new facility is needed and bar end is the best place for it. The new Sport and Leisure site will certainly offer us a great opportunity and we have already started considering what the club programme could look like there.

This week we have been a coach down so have to apologise for any cancellations or changes we have had to make within the squads programme. We are looking at our schedule for the remainder of this week and early next week to ensure we only cancel sessions as a very last resort.

It is no secret that the coaching programme we are currently trying to run is not resilient enough at the moment, meaning if a single coach is away or off we struggle to service it. We are in this position for a number of reasons, not least of which is a desire to offer the most expansive and diverse programme we can for our swimmers. We are taking a number of steps to strengthen our position, including advertising for a new coach. In December we will also review the programme for the new year and may make changes to reduce the fragility. In the meantime I would ask that you continue to work with us, or at least bear with us. Any ideas or suggestions please drop me an email.

We have been putting in place some of the final jigsaw pieces needed to be able to start promoting the Club Presentation evening, coming up on the 13 January 2018 at the University of Winchester. We are planning a fun-packed evening for everyone. Tickets will be on sale soon.

This week we have held a Club Champs wash up meeting to celebrate the successes and identify any potential improvements for next year. We hope to bring you a fuller write up on this next week but the group wanted to re-iterate their thanks to all the officials and volunteers – without you guys we can’t do much of what we do!!

WCPSC Novice Gala

Well done to everyone who took part in the WCPSC Novice Gala last weekend.   We had 76 Penguins swimmers from our lessons programme and Junior Squads swimming in three teams, along with a team from Andover and from River Park Swim Academy.   A great evening of fun with individual races & lots of relays.  For many swimmers it was their first gala so there were lots of nerves at the start but these soon vanished as the swimmers found what fun it was to race and to support their team.

A BIG THANK YOU to all those who helped on the evening to make it such a fantastic experience for so many swimmers.

Club Squad Kit - last chance to order before Christmas!

If you need any club squad kit before Christmas please note the cut off date for orders is Friday 1st December 2017.    Club kit is now available to view and order via the website HERE.

All orders placed after Friday 1st December will be processed in the New Year.

The following role is still vacant. If you think this could be something you are interested in and want to find out more about the role, please contact Katie Thorman or Amanda Frisby.

Alison Oakley (Open Meets Co-ordinator) is looking for a volunteer to join her team. The role requires the volunteer to:

  • Assist her team in inputting data for open meets i.e. entry times
  • Meet at ATR during squad training times in the evenings when is required
  • Input some data from home as required and liaise with Alison via email.
