Welcome home to our swimmers and coaches who are now back from University for the summer, especially Bronte, Gina, Samara, Adam, Matt, Ross, Nicole and Sarah!! You may have seen some of them working poolside already and not necessarily know who they are or why they are there. We tend to take this opportunity to involve them in our teaching and coaching programmes over the summer as there are a number of benefits;
- It provides variety to our squad swimmers who are coming to the back end of their competitive year
- It allows us to cover other coaches when they are away at, for example, national championships.
- It also allows us to provide our permanent coaches with their holiday entitlement in a managed way.
- The ongoing development, support and education of our members as learners, performers, helpers, teachers, coaches, volunteers and alumni is important to us and in keeping with the values of the charity / club.
All the coaches we use are competent, appropriately qualified and risk assessed, and have also had the necessary checks to ensure activities are progressive, enjoyable and safe.
Message from our new head coach, Steve Greenfield
This week, since being appointed into post, has given me the opportunity to really evaluate the role I have taken here at Penguins. There’s an exciting few years ahead of us and it’s going to be a challenge to achieve all the things that we aspire to……but I like a challenge.
I’m delighted that, again, we have a good representation of swimmers competing at Nationals this year, and I am evolving plans with other coaches and parents on the best way to support them leading up to and at the events. I am also very much looking forward to building a team of highly motivated, technically competent and engaging coaches for the future, ensuring we have performance coaching from the bottom to the top of the club.
Finally there is the new pool ahead of us and with that comes the changes necessary to secure a place for Penguins at the heart of that venue, and others, and as part of Winchester’s sporting future.
For all of these challenges I will need the best people around me to support, question and advise me, working as part of a team to allow it all to happen as effectively and efficiently as possible – welcome to that team!
We are planning to run a couple of events in the near future and need your help.
- Pop up shop and café at the club champs 8th September, 20th Oct and 24th Nov.
We are planning to sell second hand kit (flippers, snorkels, costumes, goggles etc) also teas and coffee and cakes to spectators and swimmers. For this we are looking for all second hand kit donations. Could you please keep hold of any second hand kit you have and pass it to one of the fundraising team (Emily Whyte, Sabina Lopez, Cath Johnson, Gemma Nash, Kate Thorman) or squad reps or contact us at email@example.com
We are also looking for anyone who would like to bake cakes, biscuits etc for the sale. Please let us know if you are able to bring any along for the sale by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
We also need raffle prizes for these events. If anyone runs a business, which could donate a prize e.g free meal, gym membership, gift etc please let us know. If you have any contacts for raffle prizes also please get in touch email@example.com.
- We are planning to run a car boot sale on Sunday Oct 14th. For this we are asking you to have a summer clear out and any unwanted stuff can then be donated to penguins to sell at the carboot sale. It needs to be in used but saleable condition so please keep hold of anything you maybe getting rid of. We will be asking for all donations the week starting the 8th Oct further details will be sent out in September.
In order to run the car boot sale we will need lots of the swimmers and some parents to volunteer so please put a note of the date in your diaries.
Thanks for all your help. In the meantime don’t forget to sign up for the Penguins charity lottery and also register for easy fundraising. Together we can meet our target!

Hampshire Development Meet
The entries are now closed and all entries have been accepted. Please check the swimmeets.org website and advise open meets ASAP of any errors.
Winchester have been allocated session 2 to provide volunteers to cover the door,medal table and stewarding. Please can anyone with a preference which job they would like to do let open meets know – if I do not have willing volunteers jobs will be allocated! Due to the building work that is underway at Waterlooville pool there is a chance that this meet may run without spectators. The only people who will be able to watch the swimming will be the volunteers…
We have received the following from the Development meet organisers;
Clubs, swimmers and parents should be aware that improvement work being carried out at Waterlooville Leisure Centre poses a risk to the upcoming County Development Meet.
There are two issues:
(1) There is work going on to improve the dry side changing rooms. There is a sealed tunnel to provide contractors access through the emergency exist in the pool hall
(2) Poolside seating is being replaced
The latest information that we have from Horizon Leisure is that they expect the seating to be fitted and the tunnel to be removed by 29th June. If that is the case the Development Meet will proceed as planned. This is the probable situation.
If the contractors tunnel has not been removed, we will be forced to cancel the competition.
If the new seating has not been fitted, we will not be able to use the spectator seating area. If this happen, we will run the competition, but with no spectators admitted to the pool hall.
This is probably a good time to remind people that the only people allowed on the pool deck (whether or not we spectators) are:
- Swimmers who are competing in the session
- A maximum of 2 coaches and/or team managers who must be in possession of a poolside pass
- Officials appointed for the session
- Designated non-technical volunteers in possession of passes
Please refer to https://www.swimmeets.org/calendar/showevent.php?id=895 for the latest situation updates.
