CEO Update

It was good to be part of Teacher Training last weekend, organised by our new Lessons Manager Connie Standen. The attendance was excellent and it was great to see good engagement and discussion. I hosted a quiz for the teaching team to help broaden their understanding of the Charity, who’s involved and how it runs. I think I had them stumped on whether they could name the six pool sites we use regularly for our swimming provision (answer at the end of this update).

There was a positive Board of Trustees meeting last week where, amongst other things, the Constitution, expansion of the Board and the Charity’s strategy were discussed. I will be hosting open meetings with members in due course to share the draft thinking and discuss all of these topics. Board minutes will be available on the website once finalised but should be soon.

I had a good meeting with River Park / Places for People this week to explore where there might be room for greater collaboration. We talked about talent identification from their Learn to Swim programme, joint training opportunities for teaching staff, collaboratively hosting qualifications, and a range of other opportunities. In the spirit of wider partnership working we also discussed engaging other local swim schools where working together would benefit the community we all serve. At this point in time we haven’t committed to anything other than to consider these opportunities and revisit in the near future.

I am very wary that we are yet to progress volunteer recruitment and meetings. I flagged at the AGM that we need to build and consolidate our volunteering base. As a priority I am keen to re-establish the previous work around communications / marketing as well as sponsorship / fundraising. I would also like to bring together the leads from our Safeguarding, IT, Club Shop, Squad Reps, and Open Meets groups to share what is currently happening in those areas.

Six pool sites regularly used by the Charity: St Swithuns, Winchester College, Kings School, The ATR, River Park LC and Norton Park Hotel.

Have a good week!

Good Luck

Good Luck to Rory Fitzgerald (masters squad) who will be competing at the British Ice Swimming Championships in Yorkshire this weekend!

Good Luck to George Budden (Performance Potential squad) who is competing for Great Britain at the Modern Pentathlon World Cup event in Cairo Egypt!

Good Luck to all of the swimmers competing in the Novice Gala at River Park this Saturday evening.

Hampshire Institute of Sport – Penguins swimming club selected for pilot programme

2018 is set to be an exciting year for young athletes with the launch of the new Hampshire Institute of Sport pilot project.

The Hampshire Institute of Sport is a joint venture between Winchester-based charity Energise Me, University of Winchester and Hampshire County Council. The pilot project, which was launched last week, will span four months and will provide tailored support for 16 athletes from three Hampshire clubs. The athletes are all aged between 13 and 17 and are aiming for the world stage.

Athletes involved in the pilot will benefit from video analysis and biomechanical testing to develop their technique, prevent injury and fine-tune their performance. Tests will be conducted by Masters students from University of Winchester under the supervision of lecturers.

The pilot project has grown out of the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS), which is managed by Energise Me and funded by Hampshire County Council. All of the participating athletes have come through HTAS.

The scheme offers grants for some athletes as well as sports science and lifestyle workshops to help athletes deal with the physical and mental pressures of competing. University of Winchester and Southampton Solent University have both delivered workshops through the scheme.

Congratulations to our Excel Squad swimmers – Tom Menlove, Marcus Scullion, Charlotte Prince-Rayner, Iona Morley and Fergus Phelan on being selected for the pilot programme.

Volunteers Needed for Primary Schools Gala planning team

Our annual Primary Schools Gala will be held on Friday 7th June 2018 at Riverpark Leisure Centre.

If you have some time to spare and would like to join our established team to help organise this great event we would love to hear from you.  Our first meeting is next Friday 2nd March, so please do email Vicky if you are able to come along.

Welcome back to lessons!

While our termly lessons took a break this week, many of our staff and swimmers have still been super busy.

Last week we ran a half term course where we taught lessons for stages 1-8. Our feedback showed that 100% of swimmers felt that their swimming improved and 90% of swimmer rated the standard of teaching good to excellent!

We ran a free diving work shop on Saturday morning for swimmers in Stage 5 and above. We had 27 swimmers participate in an hour long session where swimmers learnt how to enter the water in a streamline position, dive through hoops and dive off the blocks. Thank you to Issy and Gina for coaching.

And finally on Saturday afternoon we ran Staff training. We had 42 members of the teaching team participate in the 3hr long training session which incorporated topics such as helpers best practises, butterfly teaching techniques, testing criteria and our club structure. Thank you to Thelma Hawkings, Issy Harrison, Henry Tighe and Gina Stables for running sections of it.

We awarded Joe Field our Helper of the Month Award and Sam Rhodes our Teacher of the Month Award.

I would also like to congratulate Charlotte Lewis, Eva Munden, Maya Nandy and George Barnes for all completing teaching qualifications this week.

A reminder that distance week will commence on the 26th February and Assessment week will commence on the 5th March. For more updates regarding our Lessons programme please follow us on FB!

Club T-shirts and Hoodies for the lessons programme!

It’s great to see some of our swimmers arriving at lessons in the new WCPSC lessons t-shirts and hoodies!   If you haven’t got yours yet why not have a look at the range below.   They are great value, and available in a wide variety of colours, and you are able to add your initials and/or surname to the back if you would like to!

If you can’t see a colour you would like, why not suggest one and we will see if we can add it to the range!
