Let me start with some congratulations:
- Rob Browne, who passed his Judge Level 1 at the recent Development Meet
- Jacob Randle-Bissell, who had his degree result through this week – 1st Class Honours
- All the swimmers that competed at the County Development Meet over the last few weeks – champions for the fourth year in a row.
The plans for the new Sports and Leisure Centre at Bar End have been submitted for planning permission and are open for public comment. This is an opportunity for you to have your say and I would encourage you to do so by clicking here. Responses are due by the 18th July. Below is the basic club position, which you can use in your response if you so choose;
We fully support the proposals for a 50m community pool in Winchester, as well as the teaching and water confidence pools. It will be great in helping WCPSC meet our existing demand as well as expanding our community, school and competitive offering. We believe the design will provide good flexible options for use of the water space
We have gained verbal assurances for the following, although not identifiable in the proposals;
- The ability to over-ride standard pool and air temperature settings for when it is full of competitors, officials, volunteers and spectators. Vents will be located in places where they cannot be blocked under the same circumstances.
- With significant amount of glass, glare will not be an issue.
- The ability to add temporary spectator seating for larger meets if required.
We are pleased to see the landscaping outside pool windows to discourage people coming close, which could potentially cause safeguarding and privacy issues.
Although on the whole pleased with the plans, we are somewhat disappointed that Swim England’s guidance to determine an alternative route to teaching / water confidence pools for when main pool is used for competitions has not been reflected in the proposals. We are also disappointed that a dedicated shared club office space has not been included in the plans as per original specifications.
Finally, minutes from the recent Trustee Board meeting, 3 July, can be found on the website here.
Heritage Open Day
We will be continuing celebrations to mark the club’s 70th year with a display of the history of swimming in Winchester, and history of the club. This will be part of the Heritage Open Day programme on September 15th between 10am and 4pm, and will held at the Winchester Lido (which sadly no longer has a pool, but is an active community sports club venue).
If you have an interest in the history of Winchester, enjoy research or have any information or knowledge of swimming over the years which would be of interest to others and/or can help with the display please contact email@example.com If you know of anyone who swam with WCPSC in the past, perhaps at the Lido or earlier in the river, please pass on their details as we would love to invite them to share stories on the day, or record to use in advance. This will also serve as useful research for the club as our records are patchy.
If you are not able to help out in advance, please put the date in the diary and come down to join in celebrations and learn a little more about the history of the club on the day.
Details of the full Heritage Open Days programme can be found here https://www.winchesterheritageopendays.org/events/2018/9/15/winchester-lido

It’s Week 12 in the Lessons programme and the count down to summer has begun! However, over the next three weeks we have lots happening!
Week 12: All swimmers should receive an email letting them know what stage and class has been reserved for them for the following term. If you have any issues or would like to move class do let us know. During this time we do tend to have an high volume of emails however we will try and respond ASAP.
Week 13: Reports will be handed out and badges will be available to purchase – so don’t forget to bring some change with you! This week is also Water Safety week so try to remember if your teacher has asked you to bring clothes to swim in!
Week 14: This week is the last week of lessons and is constructive play week! It mean that swimmers will be given an opportunity to try new skills including water polo, synchro, rookie lifeguarding, diving, sculling and some relays! If you have any issues with assessments or reports we encourage you to please do come and talk to us at the start of this week lessons. If swims are needing to be assessed we will do it during this session.

Lessons Club T-shirts and Hoodies for swimmers!
It’s great to see some of our swimmers arriving at lessons in the new WCPSC lessons t-shirts and hoodies! If you haven’t got yours yet why not have a look at the range below. They are great value, and available in a wide variety of colours, and you are able to add your initials and/or surname to the back if you would like to!
If you can’t see a colour you would like, why not suggest one and we will see if we can add it to the range!
Please remember to give the Membership Secretary a month’s notice in writing if you/your child no longer wishes to swim with the Club and we can cancel your direct debit accordingly.
If you are going away to university in September, please contact the Membership Secretary to change your membership to a student rate.
