Let me start by saying a very big thank-you to Venetia Bocchetta and family for getting out of bed early Sunday morning and running the car boot sale at the Cattle Market, on Andover Road. Winchester City Council offers local charities the opportunity to run one of the events, with stall-holder fees going straight to the Charity. Thanks to good weather and a well run event, Venetia managed to raise £678.
It was great to host a kick-off meeting this week for organising the club’s presentation evening. Provisionally the 10 December or 13 January we hope the event is going to be one not to miss. More details to follow shortly.
A small group of IT experts have been busy behind the scenes identifying potential solutions that can help create efficiencies within the charity. Darren Whitt spent time with the management team yesterday morning to help further refine what the final proposals will be.
The management team spent a little bit of time revisiting the type of programme that we could run at a new 50m site at Bar End as part of submitting additional information to the City Council. When we completed the maths it came as little surprise that we would be adding between £6m and £7m of pool hire income across the life-span of the facility!! We intend to work with the City Council, Swim England and other partners to ensure the facility specifications, pool programme and business case are fit for purpose.
Finally, this month we are preparing to submit ‘health check’ documentation to Swim England as part of our SwimMark Accreditation. This accreditation recognises good governance, strong membership, volunteer infrastructure and sustainability in line with the charity’s objectives. It is an important kite-mark of quality across all the work of the charity. We are due to submit our updated documentation on the 27 October.
PS. It’s great to see some of our swimmers and coaches at parkrun on Saturday mornings for the free weekly 5km timed run. It’s co-ordinated by parkrun UK and run by local volunteers with a passion for running. Although not official part of any Penguins activity, I can recommend it, and I know some of our parents attend whilst their children are swimming inside at River Park. We will be putting in an order for new Blueseventy swim bags!
There are now two types of bags available for the swimmers – each with the club logo and the opportunity for you to have it personalised with your initials. The bag on the left of the photo is the transition bag, and the one to the right is the streamline bag.
If you are interested in ordering a club swim bag (great for a Christmas present!) please email firstname.lastname@example.org with the type of bag you wish to order and the initials you want on the bag.
Streamline bag £40
(usually retails for £45 without club logo and initials!) – smaller in size with a 30L capacity this bag is very popular with the swimmers, a good quality bag with a cool modern design.
The classic pool backpack streamlined with all the features you need and none of the ones you don’t. The large main compartment is accessible via a full length side zipper so nothing is ever out of reach while a sleeve pouch secures important items inside. The crucial bottom ventilated wet compartment features PVC lining to prevent items in the main compartment from getting wet. A top felt pocket ensures your phone, sunglasses and goggles are kept separate and safe.
Durable and water-resistant polyester and nylon fabric
Raised foam padded backing and shoulder straps
Front pocket features reflective piping and is perfect for team customization
Compression strap on side gusset for meet tags and credentials
Side mesh water bottle holder
Transition bag £50

(usually retails for £70!)- for the swimmer who wants to take everything with them!
The Transition Bag holds everything you need on race day yet is compact enough that you won’t feel like you’re setting off on an expedition. The large insulated bottom section separates wet gear from the main compartment. Two expandable side water bottle holders and four smaller zipped pockets for essential items. Fully loaded this bag fits all airline carry-on requirements.

ORDERS TO BE WITH CLUB SHOP BY WEDNESDAY 18TH OCTOBER 2017!
It’s that time of the week again when you’re frantically skimming through the weekly notices, trying to pick out only the bits you need to read as life is too hectic to read everything!!! Please spend 2 minutes reading this section as your club really needs your help to function. This week there are 3 areas where we require volunteers:
Club Champs is only one week away and we still need to fill some roles with volunteers. If you have any time, which you can give to help, please do come forward and contact us. If you are a swimmer and would like to do results running when you aren’t swimming, we would love your help too. Or if you’re a sibling and are bored and hot on the balcony, we can keep you busy (you may even get free jelly babies!!!!) We are particularly short of volunteers in the afternoon sessions. The announcer role is still vacant too for some sessions. This can be a fun job, you will have all you need to announce written down but you can bring your own personality to the role too. If you are not sure about this but would like to shadow someone doing it first, please contact us as we do have an announcer doing some of the sessions who would be pleased to show you the ropes. Please note that you can still watch your child swim when you volunteer, and sometimes get a better view from poolside.
Grand Prix 1
Grand Prix 1 is fast approaching and will be on 25th November 2-5pm. As we are running this event we need as many officials and poolside helpers we can get. It’s a good event to start volunteering for as it’s very friendly and ‘in house’. It’s only the afternoon too so won’t impact on busy lives too much. Please come forward and contact us if you can help.
Disability Swimming Coordinator
Our CEO, Mike Fisher is looking for someone / a team of volunteers with a passion for disability sport who can lead a team of organisations to develop a meaningful programme of swimming activities for disabled participants. The initial brief is to co-ordinate two to three meetings of local organisations that have a vested interest in this area to try to map out a way forward. I would like these meetings to happen before Christmas if possible so we have a chance to start building this into a programme next year. If you think this could be you and you are able to give a couple of hours a week or more should you wish, please get in touch. Any time you can give would be very much appreciated.
To help with any of these roles please contact Katie Thorman and Amanda Frisby on email@example.com

A draft list of entries has now been emailed out. (If you have not received this please contact firstname.lastname@example.org urgently)
Thank you to those who have emailed us with any omissions / amendments.
We will send out an updated list by the end of the weekend for final checking.
Payments will be taken as soon as possible from next week.

SECOND HAND KIT STALL
As last year, we will be running a second hand kit stall.
If you have any unwanted / outgrown training equipment – fins, paddles, etc then please do bring it along on the day. We will also be happy to sell training and racing swimwear – as long as it is in good condition.
A good chance to pick up some bargains!
Heads Up for Masters
Fareham Nomads SC have recently released the following tweet:
- Fareham Nomads Swimming Club are pleased to announce we will be adding a Masters Meet to our calendar this season.
Saturday 28th April 2018 @ The Quays, Southampton.
More information to come …
This will be a great addition to the calendar!
Please note that swimmers should then send confirmation to our open meets team for their entries, and the closing date in 16th October. This is a high level senior meet, so there will only be a few swimmers eligible.
