CEO Update

Hi and happy belated Easter to everyone. If your house is anything like mine you will be ‘swimming’ in chocolate at the moment.

Just to give you a quick day-in-the-dull-life of the management team, we have recently spent some time looking at forthcoming changes in the General Data Protection Regulations. Although a little tedious, it is very important that we remain compliant with data protection laws and treat your information sensitively and appropriately. As such we are updating our policies and will shortly publish a position that will outline the changes and their implications to you.

Emails, calls and meetings relating to the recruitment of the permanent Head Coach are still ongoing. Initial interest has been positive and I will be working with the coaching and management team, along with Swim England, to outline a robust shortlisting and interviewing process that will follow the closing date on the 13th April.

Thanks to those that provided feedback on the draft Constitution. Most comments related to how this reaches people and informs Board recruitment, etc, so there were no fundamental challenges to the content. As such I will be starting the process of gaining agreement from the ASA and then the Charity Commission on the draft. If further feedback emerges we should still be able to incorporate it as we go through the process, although it does depend a little on what the feedback concerns.

Finally a big congratulations to all those involved in the successful Portsmouth meet at the weekend.

Portsmouth Easter Celebration Meet – Report

Twenty four Winchester swimmers entered some 174 individual events over the four-day Easter Celebration Meet last weekend.
This top level meet was targeted at swimmers laying down times in the national qualification window, chasing long course regional qualifying times as well as younger swimmers using the opportunity to improve their times in Portsmouth’s 50-metre pool. Each session concluded with 14 and under and 15 and over finals in all 50, 100 and 200-metre events – great practice for South East Regionals.

There was some tough racing in a long weekend of swimming.

Notable mentions to:
All our die-hard, Thursday night, long distance swimmers – all finishing in the top seven in their age groups.
All the weekend’s medal winners – Tom Menlove, Fergus Phelan, Cerys Prince-Rayner, Charlotte Prince-Rayner, Millie Dixon, Amelia Badnell, Jack Morgans, Sam Flack, Oskar Priesemann, Katie Osborne.
Our 11 and 12 year old swimmers battling out some great times and getting solid experience at this level.
Isabella Fraser-Corbridge and James Baxter – back from time out for injury with a vengeance!
All the swimmers who managed to make finals at this high-level meet.
Well done to all swimmers – every single one of you impressed your coaches this weekend.

It’s great to see some of our swimmers arriving at lessons in the new WCPSC lessons t-shirts and hoodies!   If you haven’t got yours yet why not have a look at the range below.   They are great value, and available in a wide variety of colours, and you are able to add your initials and/or surname to the back if you would like to!

If you can’t see a colour you would like, why not suggest one and we will see if we can add it to the range!

We have recently added a comprehensive guide to swim competitions on the website here:

This includes a guide to the different types of competitions we enter (from galas to Nationals and beyond!); a guide to how to enter meets; and a glossary of some of the terms you may hear.

There is information relevant to all levels of swimmer, but those newer to the sport may find it particularly helpful.

Grand Prix Round 4 - 21st April 2018

Welcome to our new swimmers who have joined us recently and not yet had the opportunity to join in the Grand Prix 2018 Series.

The Grand Prix Series is a competition just for swimmers in Foundation, Development and Junior Challenge squads, with a few invites from Junior Advanced lessons. Swimmers from other squads can enter on a time trial basis but not score points in the series.

It’s a great opportunity for swimmers to compete within their age groups and have a go at competing on every stroke, on all distances, throughout the series. Everyone scores points for getting a PB ( personal best time) and then position points within their age group.

I know we’ve only just completed GP3 but Grand Prix 4 is on Saturday 21st April at St Swithuns 2-5pm.

The events in GP4 are the 200m Individual Medley,100m butterfly and 50m freestyle and 100 backstroke. I suggest that swimmers enter 3 events maximum in this round. For the younger and less experienced swimmers they need to be confident doing 50 butterfly to be able to enter the 200IM as this is 50m of each stroke. Anyone thinking of entering the 100 butterfly have a chat with me first 🙂 I recommend that new swimmers only enter the 50 freestyle and 100 back unless they have already confidently completed the 50 fly in GP3.

I have put this entry form out early as I know some of you will be away soon for Easter, so this still gives you time to submit before the closing date.

Do read all the attached information and get your entry in before the closing date, which is Friday April 6th.
