Regional Championships 2017!
Regional Champion and Medals Alert!
Last weekend saw the 15/O Winchester swimmers compete at the Regional Championships 2017! We had a record performance at the meet.
Following on from our record number of swimmers qualifying for regional championships with 35 of the club’s swimmers competing at this prestigious level, we had a great first weekend!
TOM MENLOVE – became REGIONAL CHAMPION & GOLD MEDALIST in the 1500m Freestyle – going one better than his silver medal in 2016. Tom also competed in the 200m Free, 400m Free, 200m I.M, 400m I.M.
BOYS – 4 X 200M FREESTYLE – in what turned out to be a exciting race – the boys team of Fergus Phelan, Tom Menlove, Marcus Scullion & Pietro Forconi battled their way to a SILVER MEDAL in the relay, placing just behind Wycombe and beating Guilford by 0.03 seconds! The boys have put themselves in the strongest possible position now to qualify for the national championships in July!
CHARLOTTE PRINCE RAYNER – won a hat-trick of BRONZE MEDALS in the 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle and also gained personal best times in the 200m Backstroke.
GIRLS – 4 x 100M MEDLEY RELAY – The team of Charlotte Prince-Rayner, Eva Munden, Iona Morley & Faye Francis competed together to place 8th overall in the team event! The girls will have an anxious wait now to see if they have qualified for the national championships in July.
FERGUS PHELAN & CHARLIE TALKS – qualified in personal best times for the Finals in the 200m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke respectively. Fergus also competed in the 400m & 1500m Free, 200 Back & I.M.
EVA MUNDEN – produced season best times in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke events to qualify for and move forwards in the finals.
JACK MORGANS, MARTYN HUMPHRYS & MADISON STEPNEY – also competed In their 3rd regional championships.
Head of Performance Kim Hill says “The first weekend of the regional championships was a mammoth weekend, with swimmers having to face some unexpected challenges, which they did in great style! Some of our swimmers have high goals set, and it has been key to seeing what they need to do looking ahead to the rest of the season! Our results this weekend saw us have the best start to a regional championships the club has ever had, and has inspired the younger swimmers to also step up in the coming weeks!”
Congratulations to George Budden who competed in Spain in the Euro Cup for Pentathlon placing the highest Brit in the U19 competition.
Also congratulations to Mia Goodale and Will Blount who have qualified to represent Great Britain at the European Biathlete Championships in Portugal in July.
Challenge Squad Goes Paintballing!
Last Sunday, the Challenge Squad enjoyed a fun day out Paintballing at Delta Force (in some woods near Romsey).
In total 15 members of the squad and one over enthusiastic squad rep took part, donning military combat gear, helmet and protective goggles – they were needed!
After a safety briefing the squad entered the woods somewhat trepidatiously armed with several hundred balls and proceeded to what can only be described as ‘shoot as many people as possible.’ Everyone emerged from the woods bruised but with smiles on their faces!
A good fun day out was had by all.

Winchester Primary Schools Gala – DATE CHANGE and MORE HELP NEEDED!
Due to River Park being used for the General Election vote count, the Gala will now be held on Friday 16th June 8.30 -12.30am. Thank you to those who have previously responded to requests to help on the day. However we do need nearly 50 volunteers to be able to run this event, currently we have just over 20, so if you could possibly help then please do let me know. Wide range of things to be done, registration, refreshment, sorting swimmers etc. Please do not leave it to just before the gala to offer.
Help is also needed for set up on Thursday 15th 8-10.30pm.
We really do need your help now to raise the funds to be able to run the event. We are a very small team and we need your help to raise the £3,000 needed for this event. We have so far raised nearly £2,000.
There are many ways you could help and these are outlined in the attached letter. Maybe you have your own business and could sponsor or place an advert. Maybe you have links with local business or could ask your employer. Maybe you are interested in making a small donation. Maybe your company/ local business have logo items for the children’s goody bags. Please do use this letter. We do also have copies of last year’s programme if anyone is keen to see the quality of our programme to assist in their decision to add an advert. Do just ask.
Artwork needs to be submitted by May 15th.
Every little help is very much appreciated.
Do note that we have a new contact email for any correspondence regarding gala fundraising: firstname.lastname@example.org
